Cape Wickham Links, located on King Island at the northern tip of Tasmania, is an award-winning links-style golf course that opened in October 2015. Designed by Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver, it features a dramatic 18-hole, par‑72 layout spanning roughly 6,150 m, all set against the rugged coastline of Victoria Cove and Bass Strait

Location & Natural Environment

The course is perched atop windswept cliffs, offering ocean vistas at every hole—a coastal links immersion rare in golf . Nearly 14 of the 18 holes run along the shore, with crashing waves audible and visible from tees and greens . Fescue fairways and greens mimic traditional Scottish and Irish links turf, while sandy soil ensures stellar drainage and firm play.

Design & Key Holes

  • Opened after a meticulous routing process focusing on the natural terrain
  • Features award-winning routing recognized globally; Golf Digest ranked it 24th in the world and 3rd in Australia
  • The 1st and 18th holes—flanking Victoria Cove—are considered among the strongest opening/closing holes in golf, with Tom Doak praising them highly
  • Standout holes include the coastal par‑3 11th and dramatic par‑5 9th, both offering memorable risk-reward challenges

Facilities

  • Clubhouse: Licensed venue offering meals and drinks (lunch 12:00–14:30 by reservation). A pro shop stocks essentials and Cape Wickham gear
  • Practice Areas: Features chipping/pitching zones and a 12-hole putting course; no full driving range .
  • Accommodation: While onsite villas are offered separately, nearby Currie provides additional lodging; remote feel ensures a peaceful stay

Prestige & Recognition

  • Regularly ranked Australia’s #1 golf course, surpassing Royal Melbourne in Golf Digest’s Top 100 rankings
  • Placed #24 globally and #3 in Australia upon debut

Tom Doak and UK Golf Guy laud its opening/closing holes; "one of the most incredible golf experiences you will find anywhere"
