Northern Scotland Hidden Gem Golf Courses: Golspie

Many golfers when visiting the Scottish Highlands play at the famous Royal Dornoch, but this area has several other excellent but little known courses.

Golf Breaks in Scotland: Golspie Golf Club

Golspie Golf Club offers one of the finest settings for a round of golf in the Highlands of Scotland with stunning views over the Dornoch Firth and the towering backdrop of Ben Bhraggie this is truly a Highland Gem.

The Par 70 course has ever-changing views and will suit golfers of all abilities. There are a few heathland holes that cut through beautiful fields of heather and gorse and two holes adjacent to a Scotch pine forest termed parkland.

But the course actually plays like a classic links course with greens that are saucered, domed, hidden beyond grass-tufted hills or even two-tiered. James Braid, the designer of such gems as Gleneagles, Carnoustie, Nairn, Brora and Boat of Garten, must have had a challenging time designing Golspie.

The land on which it’s built changes from links to heathland then to wooded parkland.

It’s a testament to his vivid imagination and design skills that he could rise to the challenge and create eighteen holes that intertwine the landscape so well. This is one golf course that is off the beaten track for most golf tourists which add to the enjoyment.

This alone makes it an essential part of any Highlands of Scotland golf vacation and tour.

Golspie Golf Club: An Award-winning Scottish Golf Course

The course is kept in great condition and has won a Golf Tourism Scotland’s award for course quality.

It begins with an unexceptional looking par 4. At 385 yards it seems to offers no problem.

But beware the first 6 holes are typical of the Scottish links golf holes, on this first hole your second shot must carry a deep depression and a series of mounds to a very small green.

Five holes follow along the shore following the natural contours decreed long ago.

There are deep depressions, huge gullies, ripples and bumps, and sorts of natural that you’ll be hitting or running your ball over.

These opening links golf holes are a difficult but great joy and then you have the variety of a little heath and parkland.
