Tiger Woods Planning a Come Back at the Safeway Open
Tiger Woods recently announced his return to golf at the Safeway Open taking place from the 13th to the 16th of October at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. Woods also intends to take part in the 2016 Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya in November.
“I’m looking forward to going to California for my foundation event and Safeway. I’m also excited to return to Turkey and Albany. It could be a fun fall.”
Tiger said “It was difficult missing tournaments that are important to me, but this time I was smart about my recovery and didn’t rush it. It was great spending time with my children Sam and Charlie, and also working on a lot of projects including golf-course design, the upcoming 20th anniversary of my foundation and my book about the 1997 Masters. But I missed competing. I want to thank all the fans for their kindness and concern. I’ve been a pro about 20 years, and their support has never waned.”
His intention to return to golf this year has stirred up some excitement in the world of golf.
Golf Professionals on Tiger Woods return to Golf
Phil Mickelson: “I’m hoping we can get paired together [at the Safeway Open.] That would be really fun. I would love it. t’s great to have him back, and hopefully he’s physically able to practice the way he needs.
Jason Day: “It should take a few tournaments for him, but hopefully he gets it back pretty quickly and he can get back to – well, hopefully not the old ways – but more so closer to the old ways and it would be fun to play against him when he’s at his best.”
Brandel Chamblee:“If he comes back and he continues to swing the way he was swinging when he was last playing, I think that he will risk injury.”
Johnny Miller: “If he’s going to come back and play some kind of a schedule, you cannot count Tiger Woods out. Talent always comes to the surface if you give it a chance,” Miller said. “They always say a great fighter, a boxer, always has at least one more great fight in him, and I think he has more than one great fight. I really pick him to win six or eight tournaments in the second career, at least. That’s my feeling.”
Rory McIlroy: “He brings an aura and an atmosphere that no-one else in golf can bring. I’ve missed that. Hopefully he can get out on the course and stay healthy for a prolonged period of time.”
Jack Nicklaus: “It’s great to see you back and in good health. You’ve done so much for the game and it’s better with you playing. Good luck!”
Woods last played in 2015 Wyndham Championship tournament, before taking a break from competitive golf due to back injuries. Before the Wyndham Championship, Woods had undergone two back surgeries, but felt that he was not physically fit to take part in another tournament.
Woods intends to also take part in the Tiger Woods Foundation-run Hero World Challenge in early December at Albany and the Tiger Woods Invitational in October.
