Jason Day: Back On The Course After A Three-Month Absence
The world’s number one ranked golfer, Jason Day returned to golf on Sunday as he took to the course to play semi-competitively at the Vero Beach Country Club.
The last time the Aussie player played in a tournament was at the Tour Championships of which he exited after the second round owing to back issues. Day’s back injury at the Tour Championship was due to a strained ligament on his lower back. The back injury is not considered too serious and it highly unlikely that it will affect his overall health.
“This is actually a good test to see how the back is,” said Day. “But it’s hard for a charity event to get myself up to tournament level. The biggest thing is to enjoy myself and have fun with Jake and his family.”
Jake Owen, a country music star is Day’s buddy who grew up in Vero Beach. He invited Day to come play at the Hale Groves Indian Grapefruit Pro-Am event which benefits the Owen foundation. Day was excited to get back on the course, although he did admit that he did not want push himself.
Day also mentioned how Tiger Woods has also been struggling with a bad back. Day has always looked at Tiger Woods as his friend and mentor. He spoke of how Woods gave him some very helpful advice and tips that helped him win his first major title, which was the 2015 PGA championship.
Day has also be a great friend to Woods, as he has often offered him a lot of encouragement. Woods, who recently returned to competitive golf had been absent for 15 months owing to back problems.
“Time is not on his side. He’s going to be 41 soon,” said Day. “In a selfish way, I want him to come back. I want to try and beat his at his best. It would be great to see him have one last shot at trying to break Jack’s (Nicklaus) record. ”
Well, for Day it was not about competing for a title on Sunday, but about having fun and having a good time with his friend.
