CARNOUSTIE 2018 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP PACKAGES

Golf has been played on the links at Carnoustie since the 16th century. The present course was first laid out by two famous St Andrews professionals Alan Robinson and Tom Morris in 1842. Tom Morris added the further eight holes in 1857. Other than being extended by James Braid it has changed little since. The reputation of the Championship course is to be the toughest in the UK and Ireland and one of the toughest in the world, and you need to hope that the weather is kind. Tiger Woods came to Carnoustie in 2007 having won the two previous Open’s at St Andrews and Royal Liverpool. He was aiming for three in a row which had only been achieved by Peter Thompson in 1954-56. It was a tough layout and he finished 12th with Padraig Harrington winning his first Open.

The course starts to get really difficult from the 578 yard sixth. This is a challenging hole and was named ‘Hogan’s Alley’ after Ben Hogan won the Open Championship in 1953. The four finishing holes are particularly severe. The 15th, 16th and 17th are considered to be some of the world’s best finishing holes. The 18th is often rated the most difficult final hole anywhere.
The 472 yard fifteenth known as ‘Lucky Slap’ is the most exacting par 4 on the course. The 245 yard par three sixteenth is called ‘Barry Burn’. In 1975 the winner Tom Watson failed five times to make a par. Jack Nicklaus was the only player in the final round to get past the pin. A par here is very welcome. The 461 yard par four seventeenth is called ‘Island’ you have to cross the’ Barry Burn twice. The eighteenth is really difficult, a 499 yards par four. It has the Barry Burn in play for the first and second shots. In 1999 the French golfer Jean Van de Veldt had a comfortable lead at the last. He ended up paddling in the ‘Barry Burn’ losing his lead and then losing a play off to first time winner Paul Lawrie.
