This is a review of the 2016 men’s golf championships and other events.

Major Championships

The 2016 Masters Tournament (80th Edition)

Venue: Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

Date: April 7 – 10

Winner: Danny Willet

Summary

Danny Willet won the 2016 Masters Tournament title by three strokes beating contender Lee Westwood and defending champion, Jordan Spieth. Willet victory made him the first European to win the Masters in 17 years. The first European to win the Masters was Nick Faldo in 1996.

The 2016 United States Open Championship (116th U.S. Open)

Venue: Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania.

Date: June 16-19

Winner: Dustin Johnson

Summary

Andrew Landry led in the first round and Johnson in the second. In the third round Shane Lowry was in the lead by four strokes after birding the 15th and the 17th. On the final round, despite a contentious penalty on the fifth green, Johnson won the title by three shots.  

The 2016 Open Championship (145th Open Championship ) 

Venue: Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayshire, Scotland.

Date: July 14-17

Winner: Henrik Stenson

Summary

The Open championship was played on Troon’s Old Course and it was the 9th Open championship to be played at the particular course. In the first round Phil Mickelson was in the lead with three shots ahead of Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer. In the second round, Mickelson was still in the lead, but was overtook by Henrik Stenson in the third round by a single shot. After an outstanding and dramatic play between Henrik Stenson Phil Mickelson, Stenson took home the title. He was the first ever Scandinavian player to win a major title.

The 2016 PGA Championship (98th  PGA Championship) 

Venue: Baltusrol Golf Club in Spingfield Township, New Jersey.

Date: July 28-31

Winner: Jimmy Walker

Summary

This was the first time Walker won a major championship title after scoring a 14 under par and one stroke ahead of World’s number 1 ranking golf player, Jason Day.

World Golf Championships

The 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship (17the Edition)

Venue: Trump National Doral in Doral, Florida

Date: March 3-6

Winner: Adam Scott

Summary

Adam Scott won by a one shot lead over Bubba Watson taking home a prize fund of $1,620,000. It was his second consecutive PGA tour win. The first one was the Honda Classic, which he had played a week before the WGC-Cadillac Championship event.

The 2016 WGC-Dell Match Play (18th Edition)

Venue: Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas

Date: March 23-27

Winner: Jason Day

Summary

Jason Day who is currently ranked  number 1 in the World Golf rankings won the title after defeating runners-up Louis Oosthuizen. This was Day’s second WGC-Dell Match Play victory.

The 2016 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational (18th Edition)

Venue: Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio

Date: June 30th  to July 3rd

Winner: Dustin Johnson

Summary

This was Johnson’s first WGC-Bridgestone Invitational event win and his third WGC win.

The 2016 WGC-HSBC Champions (8th Edition)

Venue: Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, China

Date: October 27-30

Winner: Hideki Matsuyama

Summary

Mutsuyama victory made him the first Japanese to win a World Golf Championship title.

May 12-15: The Players Championship – won by Jason Day

May 26-29: BMW PGA Championship – won by Chris Wood

November 3-6: Turkish Airlines Open – by Thorbjørn Olesen

November 10-13: Nedbank Golf Challenge – won by Alexander Noren

November 17-20: DP Word Tour Championship, Dubai – won by Matthew Fitzpatrick

Team Events 2016

January 5-17: EurAsia Cup (2nd Edition) – won by the European team after beating the Asian team by a score of 18½ – 5½.

September 30th to October 2nd: Ryder Cup (41st Edition) – won by the USA team after beating the European team by a score of 17-11. The USA team regained the Ryder cup after an 8-year drought.  

November 24-27: World Cup of Golf (58th Edition) – won by the Danish team.
